New Star Wars movie review

My 11 year old daughter and I recently watched the new Star Wars movie. I watched all the old movies many many time. The old Star Wars was wonderful.

Beautifully written

lots of intrique

mystery

action of course

very well defined characters, both good and bad, that we came to know and love

and on and on Well, now we have a new Star Wars. No longer though is it being produced by George Lucas. Now Star wars belongs to Disney and was produced by J.J. Abrams. I did enjoy Star Wars, but it was just a shadow of the original.

To start with, I looked to the opening of the movie. In the original, we saw beautiful Star destroyers that looked and sounded awesome. In this one, we see a black shadow of a star destroyer moving across a planet, then blacking it out completely. A very disappointing beginning compared to the original.

When the original Star Wars was created, Lucas already had in mind a long long series of movies. He took his time developing strong characters and strong story lines that would endure the test of time.

In the new Star Wars, we have characters that we know little to nothing about. Story lines that are poorly developed and what seems like a rush to get from the beginning of the story to the end of it.

It was as if JJ Abrams could not decide if he wanted to make this a 1 time movie and therefore tell the entire story from front to back in just this 1 movie, or he wanted to make this into a series of movies. What we wound up with was a movie that tried to do both.

The movie tells us a story from begentnig to end and also leaves us hanging for the next. It did a bad job of both!

In the original movie, we had Darth Vader. A wonderful villain that was very very well written. He kept his mask on all the time only a few times taking it off over the course of the entire series of movies. The one time he did take it off, we saw a hideous glimpse of the evil and ugly thing he had become.

In the new Star Wars, we have new villain. He wears and interesting less intimidating masks. He voice is not deep and menacing like Earl Jones that played Darth. It sounded like the voice was 2001.

The evil character in the new Star Wars was constantly taking off his mask and when he did, we say a young kid with a head full of hair. A pretty boy of you will. My daughter even said tht the evil guy was too good looking to be evil.

Then there was the use of the force. In the original movies, We had the Jedi. There was a master and a padiwan. The padiwan trained for years before he could master the techniques of the force and handling a light saver.

In this movie, it was more magical. The characters knew nothing of the force, then in the next scene, not only knew how to handle a light saber, but knew it well enough to take on the main evil villain.

Then there was the plot of the movie. In the original movie, we have the death star that they are trying to destroy. But it takes a while to develop this story. We care about the story, the planets that are facing destruction and the people.

In this movie, the same plot is rehashed as if the writers could not think of anything new, so just borrowed the same story line from the original movie. This time we have another death star, jut bigger.

When it came to the death star and the planets loosing their life, I didnt care. The movie did a poor job of building the story line so that I would care. In the original, when the death start was destroyed, you wanted to rejoice right along with the characters in the movie. In this one, when its destroyed, all you can say is well that was fun, whats next?

I even felt toward the end of the movie that I was done and could not wait till it was over. I never felt like that with the original movies.

All in all, I would say to save your money and wait until this comes out on video. It is good, but not good enough to spend $20 to $40 to go see it on the big screen.
